Correct a record, or add to it
The records get things wrong, and families hold what the records never had. Both are welcome.
The contribution form opens in a later phase of this site. Until then, corrections and material reach the archive through the 483rd Bombardment Group Facebook group.
What helps most
- Photographs with names on the back, or with your identification of who is who.
- Anything with a date: letters, diaries, orders, telegrams, the 50-mission certificate, discharge papers (the WD AGO 53-55 form lists dates, decorations and the serial number).
- Corrections: a wrong first name, a man listed in the wrong squadron, a crew member missing from a crew. The records carry flags where the sources disagreed; a family's word settles many of them.
- Stories as remembered. Even a sentence ("he always said the Memmingen mission was the worst day") places a man on a day.
How your material is used
For each item you choose one line, and it is kept with the item:
- Archive only: kept for research, never shown publicly.
- Share with credit: may be shown on these pages and in the Association's group, credited to you by the name you give.
- Share freely: may be shown and passed on without restriction.
Files are kept exactly as received, filed under your name, and logged. Your name, email, relationship to the veteran and message are stored to credit you and to reply; they are never published except as the credit you chose, and are removed on request.
What the archive can give back
For any man in the register: his squadron and dates from the morning reports, his awards with general-order numbers and dates, the crews he flew with, the missions his squadron flew while he was there, and, if his aircraft was lost, the full Missing Air Crew Report with the eyewitness statements. For most aircraft: the photographs and the loss sheets the Association assembled.
